More famous than the original.
A few weeks ago we all posted a few covers of songs we though were "more famous than the original". Here is a recap of that week.
Heartbeats - José González. I’ve picked a fairly obvious tune to kick it all off with. Heartbeats was originally performed by Swedish duo The Knife. In 2005 José González’ cover version was used by Sony in their now famous Bravia commercial — the tune outlived the commercial, leaving many believing him to be the original artist. His hushed solo guitar style does completely reinvent what was an electronica smash of a song though, and in so doing he’s made the song his own, and introduced The Knife to an international audience. Slip Inside This House - Primal Scream. Primal Scream’s cover of Slip Inside This House featured on their Mercury Music Prize-winning album Screamadelica (1991). Primal Scream took the original 1967 song by psychedelic rockers 13th Floor Elevators and turned it into a drugged, sample-heavy churner with arguably one of the sexiest bass lines ever constructed. Step On - Happy Mondays. These Primal Scream contemporaries were drug-guzzling maniacs. This cover of Joburg born John Kongo’s 1971 hit is a Madchester classic. Contributed by @jontymomus.
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley. When I set my sights on Hallelujah earlier this week I had to hold thumbs that no one would beat me to it. They didn’t. I told my brother about it and he said “Yes, it’s probably more famous… Shrek was huge!” which presented a dilemma… Leonard Cohen was huge, Jeff Buckley was a cult god and Rufus Wainwright pulled out the stops on a very popular soundtrack. I’m going to go with Jeff Buckley on this one. Fight me as you please. Contributed by @nicrosslee.
Respect - Aretha Franklin. Otis Redding wrote and recorded Respect in 1965. At the time it was his second largest crossover hit. It peaked at number 35 on the US Charts. Just two years later in 1967, while working on her debut album, Aretha Franklin recorded the song with her sisters singing backup. After it was released she became a global superstar. Respect became her signature song and was, in 2004, ranked at number 5 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time. Contributed by @rowaneva.
Islands In The Stream - Feist with The Constantines. I might get shot for this one. Don’t get me wrong, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers saaaang their country hearts out on the original. But man, how can you resist the smooth and slightly melancholy timbre of Leslie Feist’s voice? Not a big fan of The Constantines, but together with Leslie Feist they completely reinvented this classic and sorry Dolly and Kenny but I prefer this version! Contributed by @luminousmk.
All Along The Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience. This is perhaps the most famous cover to be better known than the original. Famously more famous. When Bob Dylan heard this version he hailed it as the definitive one, even going on to play his own song closer to Hendrix’s when taking it live. Dylan also once said that when he sings it it’s in some way a tribute to Hendrix, more than Hendrix’s being a tribute to him. Go figure. Contributed by @RobertPrinsloo.
Listen to all the tunes on the website.
We'll definitely do this again.
